FOUR COMIC SHOPS. ONE CITY.
It's like a scene from 'The Avengers,' 'Justice League,' or more accurately, 'The Fantastic Four'....
In 2017, all four of Greensboro’s comic book stores will be teaming up for a good cause on Free Comic Book Day.
On Saturday May 6, Greensboro’s Acme Comics, Comic Dimension, Parts Unknown and Ssalefish Greensboro will devote their regular business hours to dispensing thousands of free comic books to children and adults alike as part of the Free Comic Book Day festivities hosted by comic book stores across the nation.
Then in the evening, these stores will close up for the day and join forces to participate in “We Can Be Heroes,” a ladies arm-wrestling event hosted by Greensboro Armwrestling League (GRAWL) in downtown Greensboro at the Elm Street Center.
“We Can Be Heroes” is a superhero-themed arm wrestling event wherein female participants will be dressed as inspired riffs on beloved heroes from comic books as well as science fiction and fantasy, including Captain America, Xena: Warrior Princess and Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
And while victory will go to the strongest female superhero who enters the competition, the true winner at the event will be the I Am A Queen Foundation, who will receive 100% of the net proceeds from the event.
I Am A Queen Foundation is a mentorship program for young women who live in Greensboro and High Point.
GRAWL will host “We Can Be Heroes” at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 6th at the Regency Ballroom of The Elm Street Center on 203 South Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro. WGHP’s Nick Sturtivandt , local filmmaker Jaysen Buterin and renowned illustrator Dan Dos Santos will be celebrity guest judges for the event, and GRAWL will be raffling comic books, graphic novels and other collectible prizes donated by Greensboro’s ‘Fantastic Four’ comic book retailers.
Tickets are $6 each, and can be purchased in advance at https://www.geeksboro.com/grawlfcbd or in person at Geeksboro Coffee and Beverage Company on 2134 Lawndale Drive in Greensboro.
